Abstract
During the 134th cruise of the research vessel «Professor Vodyanitsky», quantitative characteristics of the indigenous heterotrophic and hydrocarbonoxidizing groups of bacteria were obtained in the surface water layer and bottom sediments of the Kerch Strait and adjacent Black Sea waters, three months after the emergency oil spill caused by the «Volgoneft» tankers in December 2024. The number of heterotrophic bacteria (HB) in the surface water layer ranged from 102 to 105 cells/ml, and in the bottom sediments from 103 to 107 cells/g. The number of hydrocarbonoxidizing bacteria (HOB) in the surface water layer varied from 10 to 102 cells/ml, and in the bottom sediments from 7,5×10 to 4,5×103 cells/g. The maximum values of the HOB abundance in bottom sediments were recorded at two stations located directly in the strait. The results obtained on the number of HOBs overwhelmingly indicate a low potential for bacterial self-purification of marine environment components. A correlation was found between the number of GB and the depth at the sampling stations (r = 0,66; α < 0,05), while the correlation analysis showed a weak relationship between the initial parameter and the number of HOB (r = -0,27; α < 0,05). Accumulative cultures isolated from the bottom sediments of three areas of the studied water area showed ambiguous growth on fuel oil, petroleum, and diesel fuel. The results of the background studies can be used in the future for a comparative analysis of the state of the water environment components in the Kerch Strait and the adjacent Black Sea water area during ecological monitoring of the consequences of an emergency fuel oil spill.
