Abstract
This study presents the first description of the morphobiological and biotopic characteristics of the Nitellopsis obtusa (Desv.) J. Groves (Charales) within the water bodies of the Baydarsky Nature Reserve — the largest object of specially protected natural areas in network of Sevastopol. The qualitative samples of N. obtusa were collected from the Urkusta storage reservoir and Biuk Muskomia pond in 2020–2025. To clarify the morphometric characteristics and life cycle of the species, specimens from the macrophyte herbarium of the A. O. Kovalevsky Institute of Biology of the Southern Seas of RAS (SIBS) were also used. Analysis of the hydrochemical conditions in habitats of N. obtusa showed that they are similar to those in other localities, except for high concentrations of nitrogen containing compounds and low dissolved oxygen levels. Our study confirms that N. obtusa occurs at depths of 0.5–2.5 m, typically on silty sediments. The locality of the species discovered in Biiuk Muskomiya pond represents a new record for Crimea. The associated species included Chara globata, C. globularis, Myriophyllum spicatum and Potamogeton lucens and were represented by single plants. According to morphometric analysis, N. obtusa exhibits medium sized plants with weakly branched thalli. The parameters of the generative organs matched the species description except for differences in mean oogonium size (length and width) and antheridium diameter. Сo occurrence of female and male individuals of N. obtusa was observed in the researched habitats. It was demonstrated that mass development of gametangia and vegetative reproductive structures (bulbils) occurs throughout the entire growing season. Given the specific features of the life cycle and reproduction of N. obtusa, as well as the lack of data on its distribution in other areas of Sevastopol and Crimea, it is recommended to monitor the state of the identified cenopopulations, which, along with assessing the state of populations of other Charales species, will allow us to develop measures for the conservation of Charales rare species and substantiate their inclusion in the regional Red Books.
